14 August 1995, Blur release Country House, Oasis release Roll With It and all hell breaks loose.

22 years ago this week, the majority of Irish music fans were split right down the middle in way that hasn’t been seen since the infamous Boyzone vs The Corrs debate that tore our country apart and cost the state billions of pounds in damages.

Do you remember? That was anarchy.

Kidding but in all seriousness, I can still vividly remember where I was when I found out that ‘Country House’ pipped ‘Roll With It’ to the number one slot in the UK – Blur also reigned supreme in the Irish singles charts for five weeks ahead of Oasis – as Britpop reached  its cultural zenith.

Not since The Rolling Stones and The Beatles went head to head in the late ’60s had music become so much to the fore. News bulletins actually led with the news that Team Albarn reigned supreme over Team Gallagher and this footage is pure nostalgia.

FYI, I love the fact that Damon Albarn later came out and said that both singles were shit! Take a look.
