WATCH: Footage shows the state of the Electric Picnic campsite after everyone had left

Conor Heneghan

It must have been some clean-up job.

A video posted on Facebook by the charity The Jacket Off Your Back shows thousands of abandoned tents and litter strewn across the ground in an Electric Picnic campsite after everyone had left on Monday afternoon.

The charity had appealed for festival goers to donate the tents to Syrian refugees and their sleeping bags to homeless people in Dublin, but, according to the Irish Times, the vast majority of tents left behind were unusable.

A video with the caption ‘Omg the smell of piss, drink and muck is unreal, it looks like Idomeni without the refugees’ has been viewed over 170,000 times since posted on Facebook on Monday afternoon, with footage showing abandoned tents and clothes and litter strewn across the ground.

Founder of the Jacket Off Your Back charity, Kevin Kelly, told The Irish Times that he got “terrible abuse” for the post, saying: “I didn’t mean to offend anyone – these are people we will be relying on for support in coming years and the campsite wasn’t anything worse than it would have been 20 years ago, but it is no better.

“I suppose people were not doing anything we didn’t do a generation ago,” he added.

The charity collected approximately 300 tents that will be part of a container the charity is sending to the Idomeni refugee camp in Greece next week, while several thousand sleeping bags are set to be washed and donated to homeless people in Ireland.
