Fancy giving this a try?
Despite the fact that it was the poet Patrick Kavanagh who wrote On Raglan Road, the words will always be associated with Luke Kelly’s haunting, beautiful and mesmeric ballad.
Truth be told, On Raglan Road is one of the great Irish songs because it perfectly encapsulates our unique bittersweet perspective on romance, longing and melancholy.
You may also know that the actual song combines Kavanagh’s lyrics with the melody with another famous trad song, The Dawning of the Day (Fáinne Geal an Lae).
Over the years, the song has been covered by Ed Sheeran, The Dubliners, Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Mark Knopfler and Roger Daltrey, to name just a few, but you’ve never heard a version quite like this one that was performed by Mayo man Chris Kinsella and his brothers (Colin, Aaron and Jonathan)
After Christmas dinner, they all decided to play The Dawning of the Day using beer bottles with different levels of beer in the bottles to create the correct notes.
It’s quite something. Have a listen.
