Graphic: How Ireland compares to the rest of the world when it comes to annual leave

We’re not looking too bad in fairness

Conor Heneghan

We’re not looking too bad in fairness.

Most Irish people could have been forgiven for feeling a little smug compared to the rest of the world after a very welcome midweek day off yesterday, but how do we compare throughout the calendar year overall?

The folks at i100 have put together a map of the world which is colour coded to highlight the amount of annual leave workers are entitled to and the results make for interesting reading.

Compared to the rest of the world, Ireland fares pretty well thanks to a basic annual leave of approximately 20 days per annum, taking into account, of course, that the amount of annual leave depends on your employer and the type of job you have.

We certainly look well compared to the likes of the USA or certain parts of Asia, although we’ve a sudden urge to apply for a job in Russia based on what we see above.

It should be noted that the map does not account for factors such as national holidays (which accounts for a lot of leave in some countries) and specific allowances in certain countries.

It’s still well worth a look to see how we compare to other countries and will be of particular interest to anyone thinking of emigrating in search of employment in the not too distant future.
