Video: Glen Hansard and Damien Dempsey sing The Auld Triangle at the #Right2Water protest in Dublin

That certainly got the crowd going.

Thousands upon thousands of people have gathered in Merrion Square in Dublin for the #Right2Water protest this afternoon in what is the biggest demonstration yet of the opposition to the planned implementation of water charges in this country.

The hordes in Merrion Square were given a treat when two of the most high-profile musicians in the country, Glen Hansard and Damien Dempsey, took to the stage to perform The Auld Triangle a little earlier on.

The song, which first appeared in a Brendan Behan play but has since been made famous by the likes of Luke Kelly and the Dubliners and by Hansard himself, is well-known to music fans in this country, but Hansard and Dempsey altered the lyrics slightly to reference the reason why everyone was there in the first place.

Stirring stuff.
