Something positive from such a terrible tragedy.
€136,667.90 has been raised for Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit which had been researching the 13 year old lion Cecil who was shot with a bow and arrow by a tourist earlier this month.
Following the killing, Jimmy Kimmel asked people to donate to the research unit while getting caught up in the emotion of the tragedy on live TV. The presenter asked viewers not to let Cecil “die in vain” and to contribute to the work of the wildlife conservation unit.
In just under 24 hours more that €100,000 had been raised by 2,600 contributers. Phenomenal.
Director of the Oxford team David McDonald thanked the public for their generosity saying, “the email deluge is overwhelming us, we thank you sincerely.”
