WATCH: British politician delivers an incredible speech about society’s perceptions to people’s income

Rudi Kinsella

“I’ve met high earners with literally no discernible skills”.

Labour MP Jess Phillips spoke incredibly about migration in the House of Commons on Wednesday, and the speech has gone down brilliantly online.

Phillips downplayed the myth that living amongst migrants in Birmingham was a bad thing, and instead spoke about how it is in fact the opposite.

She even discussed the fact that her British pride may have wavered in recent times, saying: “My Irish heritage has never felt closer to me than in these testing times.”

But the highlight of the video comes when she starts to discuss the idea that those on high incomes are automatically more skilled than those on low incomes.

She said: “The idea that my constituents are not skilled because they don’t earn over £30,000, is frankly insulting. It is insulting on every level. Our care workers, our nurses, our teachers, there are so many people who don’t earn over £30,000.

One of the gems from the speech was Phillips saying: “I thought I’d met posh people before I’d come here, but I’d actually just met people who just eat olives.”

“I have met lots of people, who earn more than £30,000, who have literally no discernible skills. Not even one.”

And one line that we will be quoting for years to come is: “I have definitely met some very rich people, who earn huge amounts of money, who I wouldn’t let hold my pint.”
