Across the boards: The fans’ reaction to Ireland’s win

Ireland’s stuttering 2-1 win over Armenia failed to impress the Three Wise men in the RTE studio and a quick scan of the interweb reveals that the majority of Irish fans weren’t too happy either.

From spitting fury to prasing Il Trap and company, here’s a sample of what the Irish fans had to say.

“A great night for Irish football = A dark, dark night for European football as a whole.

Lovers of free-flowing, technically sound football – Be afraid, be very afraid.”

HarryPfarrer, The Guardian

“So I never believed in this whole luck of the Irish thing, especially with regard to football, but this campaign has changed my mind.

“We were very lucky against Russia, we were outclassed. We were lucky tonight with the sending off and the two jammy goals. Lucky that the results in other groups has made us a top seed for the play-offs.

“We are playing awful football, the worst I can ever remember. If we get through the play-offs it’ll be a minor miracle considering we don’t know what to do with the ball in the final third, our offensive players don’t seem to be able to strike the ball properly and our manager is the most defensive manager I’ve ever come across.”

“I wonder will the same eejits that petitioned for the Ireland v France game to be replayed do the same for the Ireland v Armenia debacle last night? Ireland were chronic and played off the field by an Armenian team royally screwed over.

But I suppose if you field Stephen Kelly, Sean St. Ledger, Keith Andrews, Glenn Whelan, Aiden McGeady (yes he is s**t…really s**t…dont be fooled by his tricks) and Simon Cox, then you dont exactly have the opposition quaking now do you.

I reckon the Armenian Football Association won’t ask to be included as a 17th team in Euro2012 either, they would have more class than that.

“I suppose it’s all about results at the end of the day but by Christ we are horrible to watch, it’s sad to say you find it hard to watch your own country.”

Kingshankly, Boards.ie

“Cox had a good game last night, congrats. But look at the goals we scored. If they weren’t so ridiculously generous to us, we’d be looking at a defeat.

“Did Trap get it right?  We’ll never know because the keeper getting sent off handed us the play-off spot. Ireland were crap last night and that is down to trap playing the type of players he does. Down to his long ball tactics. You put Coleman at right back, McCarthy in the middle, Long up front and the team will pass it. He doesn’t want the team to pass it.

“Trap has taken the team up a level, but he can’t take it any further. He refuses to change his style which means he is ignoring creative players. He won’t change his plans to suit the players who are performing well.”

Theonlyone, You Boys in Green

“God we jammed that one. Armenia are a good side and always tried to play good football so you’d have to feel for them. Good luck to them in the future.

“Andrews, Cox and Walters were good for Ireland. McGeady had a mare unfortunately, having been our best player in the last couple of games. Everyone else was fairly mediocre.

“Hopefully we get Estonia, but it’s much of a muchness, if it was Serbia from their group we wouldn’t want to meet them, so ultimately it hardly matters.

But the feedback wasn’t all bad…

“A massive big shout out today to all the negative dudes on here who must be gutted this morning. Congrats Trapattoni and the squad. Back-to-back play-offs. Fair play.”

Tuff Paddy, You Boys in Green

“To hell with all the skeptics – second time in a row we were seeded third and finished second. Two more years of Trap? Yes please! Who exactly do people want instead?!… God I would love it if we got through to the Euros. Come on Ireland!

Ganzo, The Guardian

“Well we’re through to the qualifiers! Ireland were lucky at times last night and frankly against ten men Armenia still looked threatening, but so what?!

“We’ve two massive games to look forward to with the possibility of making the summer of 2012 very good indeed! So what if our manager can’t speak English?, so what if our two first choice strikers aren’t available (at the moment)?, so what if Keith Andrews still gets a game?, we’ve got hope and we’ve got a chance!!”
