Airtricity league: Rovers win, a fitting tribute to Philip Greene

On a night when the table toppers paid tribute to one of their most high-profile fans there was a surprise result on the Northside.

Shamrock Rovers 3-0 Drogheda United

Bohemians 0-1 St Pat’s Athletic

Derry City 1-1 Bray Wanderers

UCD 0-2 Dundalk

It was a fitting tribute to their late supporter Philip Greene for Shamrock Rovers to put three past Drogheda last night at Tallaght stadium.

After a frustrating first half, the league leaders finally let loose four minutes after half-time when Sives opened the scoring with a set-piece header.

Gary Twigg grabbed two more goals as the second half wore on to polish off a victory the late RTÉ commentator would have been proud of.

Daryl Kavanagh’s second half goal gave St Pat’s a first win in Dalymount Park in three years against their Northside rivals Bohemians.

The three points means St Pat’s overtake Boh’s to go fourth in the table.

A cracking second half goal from Daire Doyle cancelled out Patrick McEleney’s strike at the Brandywell meaning both Derry City and Bray took a point each on the night.

In difficult weather conditions the result was a fair reflection on the game.

Meanwhile, a Mark Griffin brace gave Ian Foster’s Dundalk side a deserved victory against UCD at the Belfield Bowl.

Dundalk have more than holding their own in the Airtricity League this season and currently lie in fifth place, equal on points with St Pat’s, Bohemians and Bray who are all six points behind table toppers Shamrock Rovers.
