Wins for Sligo Rovers, Bray Wanderers and Bohemians on Friday night keep the heat on league leaders Shamrock Rovers.
Drogheda United 0-3 Sligo Rovers
Sligo Rovers lie in third place just two points behind league leaders Shamrock Rovers after a convincing display against Drogheda United at Hunky Dorys Park on Friday night.
Eoin Doyle bagged two goals, bringing his tally to five goals in two games, for the Bit O’ Red while second half substitute John Dillon also got in on the scoring act.
The deadlock was broken on 27 minutes when Doyle added a simple finish from five yards out after Iarfhlaith Davoren danced around a few United players’ challenges to set up the chance.
Dillon made it 2-0 from a header with 15 minutes remaining in the game and Doyle celebrated his second of the night shortly after when managed to get on the end of Alan Keane’s delivery.
Bray Wanderers 2-1 UCD
A 90th minute winner from Bray’s teen sensation Conor Murphy kept their Premier Division title hopes well in tact last night at the Carlisle Grounds.
Murphy scored both goals on a night when Wanderers moved seven points clear of the students in the league.
Only eight minutes had elapsed and the home side was ahead thanks to an attack instigated by Dane Massey.
The sides were level on 20 minutes, however, when Dean Marshall was fouled by Gary Dempsey in the penalty area. Marshall dusted himself down to slot in the equaliser.
There was a plethora of good chances for both sides as the game wore on but the winner was destined for Murphy. He finished from a tight angle in the final minute following a perfect through ball by Daire Doyle.
Bray now up to fifth spot while UCD languish in eight place.
Galway United 0-2 Bohemians
Bohemians maintained their quest for glory also at Terryland Park last night with a confident display against Galway United.
The goals came from Anto Flood and Keith Buckley, one in each half, but it was muscling out performance that turned the screw for Bohs on the night.
The visitors were ahead early on when ex-United striker Flood headed home Stephen Traynor’s cross on 12 minutes.
Early into the second half the lead was doubled through Buckley’s follow up effort after Flood forced a save from United ‘keeper Greg Fleming.
The Gypsies are now up to fourth in the table while Galway remain in trouble, second from bottom.
