He sounded surprised by the revelation.

If Ryan Giggs had hung up his boots a few years earlier then he would have been the next Manchester United manager.

That is the view of Alex Ferguson, who was speaking in the documentary ‘Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success’:

“If Ryan Giggs had retired…. at, say, 35, quite likely I would have made him my assistant and quite likely he could have moved straight into the job with the experience of being an assistant manager to me as he is doing with Louis van Gaal at the moment.”

After hearing the revelation, Giggs reacted surprised.

“He said that?… It would have been great for me personally to work under Sir Alex.”

According to Independent.co.uk, Ferguson wanted Pep Guardiola to take over from him but the former Barcelona boss wasn’t interested, before defending the choice of David Moyes.

“I don’t think we made a mistake at all… We picked the right man. Unfortunately it didn’t work for David.”
