New Zealand legend Jonah Lomu has been discharged from hospital over two weeks after being admitted with a serious kidney condition.

Lomu was admitted to Auckland City Hospital with kidney failure and had been receiving dialysis on a daily basis and other forms of treatment in an attempt to repair a kidney that he had been donated in a transplant seven years ago.

Lomu’s wellbeing had been something of a mystery, however, due to a bizarre deal the All-Black great had negotiated with New Zealand’s Woman’s Weekly, who held the exclusive rights to reveal the details behind Lomu’s illness.

Lomu’s family were also reluctant to divulge too many details about his condition and as so little information existed about his wellbeing, there were fears that he may have been gravely ill.

Thankfully, he has now been released from hospital, although he revealed to Woman’s Weekly (hopefully the last time we ever use them as a source) that there were times when it didn’t look so good.

Lomu told the magazine that his body had “started to shut down” and that he was told that there was only a slim chance that his kidney would survive.

He also said that he was “determined to make it” to watch the Rugby World Cup final later this month, although he will not take part in the competition’s closing ceremonies.
