Anderson Silva has said a mouth-watering clash against Georegs St-Pierre simply “has to happen”.

Speaking ahead of his middleweight title defence against Yushin Okami at UFC Rio, the Brazilian described GSP as “one of the best”.

‘The Spider’ continued, “He’s shown that he’s a great athlete and I really train hard every day to fight the best. I do believe it’s a superfight, and it’s a fight that must happen someday.”

Silva is getting ready for what will be his ninth defence of his UFC middleweight crown against Okami –the last person to afflict defeat on the gifted champion.

However, Silva dominated during the pair’s last meeting, knocking out his opponent with an up-kick that was declared illegal.

“I really have no interest in getting revenge against Yushin Okami,” Silva added. “We already fought. He lost. He got knocked out. Let’s move on.”

Meanwhile, welterweight champion St-Pierre is getting ready to take on Jake Shields at UFC 129 next week.

If the two both win, and it is expected that they will, a pound-for-pound decider will become difficult to avoid.

“It really is a great superfight,” said Silva. “I’m just happy that I know people are looking forward to watching this. I think this fight will make the fans happy. It’s something they’ve been waiting for, and Georges St-Pierre is one of the best. I’ll be very happy to give this pleasure to all my fans.”
