Are Mayweather and Pacquiao finally going to get it on?

It is the fight, perhaps the only fight, that anyone wants to see and hopes are rising that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will meet in May this year.

Arguably the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, the pair have circled each other for years, with many suspected Mayweather of being afraid to fight the fearsome Filipino for fear of losing his unbeaten record of 42-0.

Other barriers to the fight have included what weight the two men would meet at, arguments over pre-fight drug tests and the looming jail term that Mayweather has to face for assaulting his girlfriend. In short, it has been as unseemly and unruly as anything that boxing has seen.

But then last night Mayweather took to Twitter to issue a challenge to the WBO Welterweight champion.

Mayweather’s 90-day jail term is not due to begin until June 1 and it seems he wants to head behind bars with the scalp of Pacquiao.

There has been no response as yet from the Pacquiao camp and with May 5 just four months away it is hard to imagine that the biggest fight in the sport could be arranged at such short notice.

Still, we hope it is as we would dearly love to see somebody take Mayweather down a peg or twenty and Pacquiao is the best man for the job.

Probably the only people who want this fight more than the general public are people like HBO and Sky. This fight would generate so much cash that it would dwarf all other recent pay-per-view events and earn tens of millions for each boxer.

As we know, 2012 is already a brilliant year for sport with the Euros and the Olympics. The Mayweather/Pacquiao fight would be a real tasty bonus but we won’t get too excited about it just yet.
