Armenian weightlifter suffers gruesome dislocated elbow at Olympics

We wish him a speedy recovery…

Sport is cruel, a pat on the back is only six inches from a kick up the hole, and an injury could be just around the corner to scupper all the work you’ve put in.

We’ve already seen one horrific injury end a French gymnast’s games, but luckily he’s vowed to come back stronger than ever and has already set his sights on Tokyo 2020.

Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan suffered a shocking dislocated elbow in the men’s 77kg weightlifting final yesterday which ended his quite considerable hopes of winning his first Olympic medal.

He was attempting to lift 195kg in the clean and jerk competition when his elbow hyper-extended under the weight of the bar causing it to dislocate.

Medics and coaches rushed on to the stage and Karapetyan was transported to hospital.

Kazakhstan’s Nijat Rahimov proceeded to win the gold medal, China’s Lu Xiaojun the silver and Egypt’s Mohamed Ihab Youssef the bronze.
