Audio: Galway Bay FM’s commentary on Kevin Walsh’s shock return on Sunday was pure gold

“Guess who has come down to the sideline, taken off a black cap and is about to come into the county final, you won’t believe this”…

The club championships all over the country throw up all sorts of drama, shocks and unusual events every weekend and the Galway intermediate football final had all those ingredients on Sunday.

Killanin beat Moycullen by 0-13 to 0-10 at Tuam Stadium to clinch their first ever county intermediate championship but the game will also be remembered for another unique reason.

With six minutes left on the clock, Killanin midfielder Eamon McDonagh picked up an injury and had to be taken off. The Killanin management team turned to experience to close out the game and it came in the shape of three-time All Star and new Galway senior football manager Kevin Walsh.

The 45-year-old agreed to be a sub but his availability wasn’t known until the moment he was called onto the pitch as he was hoping he wouldn’t need to be used.

Walsh came on and made an impact as Killanin went on to win by three points but not before Moycullen hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game.

The drama at Tuam Stadium was incredible and it was summed up perfectly by Galway Bay FM commentator Ollie Turner, this is local radio at its very best…

Thanks to Cillian Thornton who let us know about the commentating masterclass.
