The bookies will be going home from today’s Aintree Grand National very happy, as will Sue Smith and Ryan Mania, trainer and jockey of the 66/1 winner Aurora’s Encore.

Before the race, all the talk was about Katie Walsh becoming the first female jockey ever to ride the winner of the Grand National but in the end, it was Sue Smith making history as the third ever female trainer to win the race as Aurora’s Encore saw off the challenge of runner-up Cappa Bleu (12/1) and third placed Teaforthree (10/1) to make the few people who had the 11-year old backed at 66/1 very happy indeed.

Aurora’s Encore won by a pretty comfortable nine lengths in the end and looked extremely impressive doing so as the picture above, taken not far from the finish, can testify.

Another Grand National done and dusted then, and another day when the bookies are left with smiles on their faces.

Where have we heard that before, eh?

John Smith’s Aintree Grand National result:

  1. Aurora’s Encore 66/1
  2. Cappa Bleu 12/1
  3. Teaforthree 10/1
  4. Oscar Time 66/1
