If Bradley Wiggins was superstitious before, he’ll be even more so after being knocked off his bike and hospitalised just days after shaving off his ‘lucky’ sideburns.
Just a few days ago, Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins spoke about how he shaved off his trademark sideburns in a bid to be less recognisable on training rides. The Olympic gold medallist had said during the London Games that the sideboards were his lucky charm and he would never shave them off.
We’re not saying we believe in this sort of thing but what happened to Wiggins last night as he was out for a ride? Yep, a van hit him and he spent the night in hospital.
It is widely reported today that the 32-year-old was out for a ride near his home at around 6pm last night when an Astra pulled out of a petrol station and collided with the cyclist. It is believed he damaged his ribs and spent the night in hospital recovering but the injuries are not thought to be too bad.
Team Sky issue a statement where they said: “The injuries he has sustained are not thought to be serious and he’s expected to make a full and speedy recovery.”
The BBC also carries some quotes from a worker at the garage in Wrightington, Yasmin Smith: “I was in the office and I heard a screeching of tyres and a bang. I ran outside and there was a gentleman on the pavement – I didn’t realise who it was at first.
“He was in a lot of pain – he actually thought he had broken his ribs.”
With the 2013 Tour a good while away yet, Wiggins should be fine but if the best cyclist in the world can get knocked down we should all be careful out there.
