A career in two halves: Robbie Keane’s unexpected American Dream

Was it Robbie Keane’s “boyhood dream” to play for LA Galaxy? Probably not.

However, it’s possible he did dream of a time when he would score cup-winning goals and be considered a legend at the club he plays for.

“It just didn’t work out for whatever reason. I didn’t fit into the way that Rafa plays football.” Robbie Keane after his Liverpool exit.

£73.3m in 7 transfers over the course of 10 years: those were the numbers everyone was talking about.

Despite playing over 200 games for Tottenham, some still unjustly saw Keane as a journeyman.

After a difficult spell at Anfield, Keane’s return to North London and the only club he had ever settled at didn’t go well.

Keane didn’t play regularly and, when he did, his form was questionable. Eventually Keane went on loan to Celtic. This was the move that seemed to rejuvenate his passion for the game.

“I’ve done well there and got back the hunger that I had before.” Keane on his time at Celtic.

Keane’s 12 goals in 16 games in the SPL was a sign of things to come. A player known as being a medium-sized fish in a medium-sized pond, choosing to become a whale in a swimming pool.

Keane moved LA Galaxy on August 11, 2011, at the age of 31.

“This is a massive opportunity for me in my career. I aim to grab it with both hands.” Keane on signing for LA Galaxy.

Keane had made grandiose statements when signing for a new club previously, but this time was different. He saw his move to LA as an opportunity; others saw it as a step back.

His goal against San Jose Earthquakes on his debut got the ball rolling and he hasn’t looked back since. Keane has been named in the MLS team of the season four times in a row and he has also been named the MLS Most Valuable Player.

“I knew that if I got a chance I would put it away.” Keane after scoring the winning goal in the 2014 MLS Cup final.

He has won the MLS Cup three times, scoring the winning goal in extra-time of last year’s final. After that game it was pointed out that Keane’s .87 goals per 90 minutes is the highest goal-to-game ratio in MLS history.

American ‘soccer’ circles regard him as a footballing god and he has even rubbed shoulders with the world’s most powerful man, US President Barack Obama.

A younger Keane probably didn’t envisage himself playing for LA Galaxy.

However, by grabbing the opportunity with both hands he has traded in his “boyhood dream” for the American dream.
