Hope can be a cruel thing…

Just ask Steven Gerrard and his Liverpool team-mates. They needed to defeat Basel to qualify for the next stage of this season’s tournament.

Time was running out, when their majestic captain did this.

You will struggle to find a better free kick this season. The former England international placed the ball beautifully and drew the game, but more importantly, he gave his team hope.

Unfortunately Liverpool didn’t have the innovation to carve another opening, but nonetheless, this strike deserves to be admired.

One win out of six games is a poor return for a Liverpool side that would have expected much more. For Reds fans, the saddest thing about Liverpool’s Champions League performance this season is that Gerrard may not play in the tournament again.
