Cheltenham Festival Day 4: As It Happened

It’s all over for another year. Here’s how Gold Cup day unfolded at Cheltenham...

JOE

1731:

Thanks for staying with us over the four days. We hope you steered you into a few winners anyway. See you next year.

1729:

So it’s all over for another year. We had great highs, like the wins of Simonsig, Sprinter Scare, The New One, Bobs Worth, Our Conor, Champagne Fever, Hurricane Fly and a great low in the very serious injury suffered by Irish jockey JT McNamara.

Ireland scooped a record-breaking 14 wins thanks to the Alderwood success in the last but the final day was subdued as the racing world absorbed the news about the popular McNamara. The Gold Cup win by Bobs Wirth was class, but Our Conor, in the Triumph, might have been the best win of the entire meeting.

The racing, even by Cheltenham’s standards, was epic, and a new star was born in Bryan Cooper, but the Festival leaves us with a heavy heart.

Fingers crossed for some positive news out of Bristol on McNamara and roll on next year.

1727:

So a fair few favourites struck today so we think most Irish punters should have had a good Festival

1724:

Here’s the final result of the final race…

1st     15 Alderwood (IRE)     3/1 f
2nd     10 Kid Cassidy (IRE)     12/1
3rd     6 Oiseau de Nuit (FR)     33/1
4th     11 Drumshambo (USA)     20/1

Winning TrainerT Mullins
Winning JockeyA McCoy
Runners 23 ran
Non runners7
Distances3 ¼, 10

1723:

One-two for JP McManus too. A fantastic meeting, winners wise at least, for Ireland

1721:

Alderwood does it! 14 wins for Ireland. A new record! Amazing, and a second win for AP. Kid Cassidy was second. Third was Oiseau Diu Nuit. Fourth was Drumshambo. Fifth was top weight Petit Robin

1716:

We’re off

1710:

One last shot, Petit Robin was a real class act but after suffering a serious injury is now having a bit of a revival. Jumping can be dodgy but at 16.7 it is a nice price. Top weight too…

1707:

Rody, 7.7, has been tipped up by a few, while Oh Crick looks very well handicapped for a horse that won this race in 2009. Now 10, we wonder if Alan King can do it again. At 50.0, an EW bet only

1704:

His main threat, a least in the betting, is Ulck Du Lin (7.1), a Nicholls/Walsh horse.

1703:

Our best bet of a record 14th Irish winner is Alderwood, by Tom Mullins. A winner at the Festival last year, and with AP in the saddle, it’s the favourite at 4.7

1657:

More reminders that the racing is just that, racing, and that real life is much harder.

Trainer Paul Nicholls after his first win of this Cheltenham Festival meet: “It has been a hard old time. That is one for Dominic [Baker, son of Nicholls’ head lad Clifford, who died in a car crash earlier this month] after he died.

“We have had to cope with a bad week and a funeral next week, that one is for Dominic.

“I thought the ground was too soft for him so I told jockey Harry Derham to hold back and he gave it an absolute peach.”

1655:

Before we get into the ‘get out’ stakes, here’s a picture of Barry Geraghty getting his hands on the most precious prize in racing

1650:

No Irish luck there, all down to the Grand Annual to see if we can do it…

1649:

Now, here’s the full result

1st     3 Salubrious (IRE)     16/1
2nd     18 Nagpur (FR)     33/1
3rd     9 Double Ross (IRE)     14/1
4th     17 Make Your Mark (IRE)     8/1

Winning TrainerP F Nicholls
Winning JockeyH Derham
Runners 23 ran
Non runners21
Unpl. FavGevrey Chambertin (FR) 9/4 F
Distances7, 1

1647:

It was the second last race but Paul Nicholls gets a winner, via Salubrious. Nagpur was second. Double Ross nabbed third, not sure on fourth yet.

1638:

They’ll be off here soon. Good luck, especially if you’re looking to recoup some losses. Phillip Hobbs is winless so far too, so his charge Village Vic is getting some support

1635:

Lots of praise for Bourne on race radio. At 15.0 and in headgear, he could deliver for Donald McCain.

1634:

By the way, the horse with the best name of the week runs in this one. Havingotascoobydo is a long shot at 44.9 but if you have any spare money, who wouldn’t want to shout that at a your laptop?

1632:

More nice words for Colman Sweeney, winning jockey on Salsify, saying it is hard to be happy with JT McNamara in hospital

1631:

This is quite a tricky one to call so again we advise you go EW whatever you back. Only Gevrey is at very short odds, all the rest are north of 10 on theTote. That means there is great EW value to be had, if you pick the right horse!

1628:

The favourite is Gevrey Chambertin, by David Pipe. His record over hurdles is flawless so his odds of 3.7 makes sense…

1627:

There’s three runners by Michael O’Leary in this one, Edeymi, Toner D’Oudairies and Make Your Mark. All are in with a shout too…

1623:

Right, next up is the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle. Two races left. Can Ireland win one more to beat the all-time record of Irish winners? Stay here to find out.

1616:

That’s 13 wins for Ireland by my reckoning. Incredible

1615:

Unseated Oscar Delta rider Miss Jane Mangan on BBC Radio 5 live: “I felt like I had the race won. This is a nightmare.”

1614:

Here’s the full result…

1st     21 Salsify (IRE)     2/1 f
2nd     9 Divine Intavention (IRE)     50/1
3rd     5 Cottage Oak (IRE)     9/1

Winning TrainerR Sweeney
Winning JockeyM Sweeney
Runners 23 ran
Non runners20
Distances20, nk
SF £135.80
Tricast £816.51

1613:

Divine Inspiration took second. Cottage Oak third

1613:

Looking at the replay looks like Oscar Delta was spooked or somethign  and ran into the railings a little, pitching Jane Mangan off. Desperate luck for her and great news for those who backed Salsify.

1611:

Oh what a disaster for Oscar Delta. He tipped off Jane Mangan as the race was in the bag. Salsify wins!

1559:

About to go here, whatever you do, back EW in this one…

1555:

We’re putting a few euro each way on Galant Nuit. A long-time off the track, we’re trusting that Gordon Elliott has him right for this one. At 21.2 it’s worth a shot

1551:

If you fancy a punt in this, the red-hot favourite is Salsify. Winner of this race last year, you can back him to repeat at 2.9. Favourites have won the last two races…

1550:

Great interview with Ruby there. Interviewer said to him bad luck after his fall in the Gold Cup. ‘No’, says Ruby. ‘I’m standing, the horse is standing, it’s good luck’. Class.

1548:

This 3m3f slog features many names that have soldiered in big contests before. Backstage, Chapoturgeon, Oscar Delta and Tricky Trickster are all names you may recognise and they all have shots, even with many miles on the clock.

1545:

The Foxhunters is off in 15 minutes. We’ll take you through that one in a minute.

1544:

We’ll have pictures of the winners and the presentation assoon as we can get our grubby little hands on them.

More kind words for JT McNamara from Barry Geraghty. Like JP, he gets a bit emotional. Tough day for all concerned, despite the usual fun and joy of Gold Cup day.

1541:

Here’s the Meath man post-race

Bobs Worth jockey Barry Geraghty speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: “It was brilliant. He is such a great little horse who just loves the job.

“We had faith in the horse. Nicky Henderson knew he would have him fit enough, he knows how to get them ready for Cheltenham.”

1538:

Barry Geraghty’s second Gold Cup, after Kicking King in 2005

1535:

That’s the 50th Festival winner for Nicky Henderson. Impressive stuff…

1533:

Here’s the final result of the Gold Cup

1st     1 Bobs Worth (IRE)     11/4 f
2nd     8 Sir Des Champs (FR)     4/1
3rd     5 Long Run (FR)     7/2

Winning TrainerN J Henderson
Winning JockeyB Geraghty
Runners 9 ran
Non runners2, 9
Distances7, 2 ¾

1532:

Watching it again, that was a classy win. Another Henderson win

1530:

That trio jumped the last together and Silvinianco Conti could have contended too but fell two from home when looking strong. Shame.

1530:

Bobs Worth is the champ, and epic finish and he held off a tiring Sir Des Champs and a beaten Long Run, who was third again.

1521:

Okay, almost time to go here. It should be a belting race. 3m2f and 22 fences. The best race of the year is just about to go. Enjoy and good luck.

1515:

Kauto Star now being brought around the parade ring. Getting lots of applause, understandably.

1513:

And here are three longer odds for EW backers. Cape Tribulation (13.1) will love the ground now, Captain Chris is classy and might enjoy the slog, if he jumps okay, at 14.8, and The Giant Bolster 16.2, was second last year.

1511:

The big Irish hope is Sir Des Champs. AP will ride Mick O’Leary’s horse after Davy Russell’s injury and that won’t affect his chances at all. A couple of ordinary runs this year in theJohn Durkan (2nd) and the Lexus (4th) we’re not convinced. The Hennessy at Leopardstown last time out was a win but we think the Gold Cup will emain a blank on Willie Mullins’ CV for at least another year. If you fancy him anywya, he’s yours at 4.5

1507:

The ground may hamper the hopes of Silviniano Conti, for Paul Nicholls. We were lamenting the losing run of AP McCoy and JP McManus until they won the last race. Can Nicholls’ miserale Festival turn around here?

1505:

The favourite is Bobs Worth. A Nicky Henderson/Barry Geraghty entry, it is unbeaten around Cheltenham, though Henderson has told the BBC that he’s not happy that the rain has come and softened the ground. The punters don’t mind, and the RSA and Hennessy winner is at 3.8 now.

Long Run is next in the betting at 4.1

1503:

Okay, let’s get into this one. The 2012 Gold Cup was a puzzle even before today. Last year’s winner Synchronized is no longer with us and Kauto Star and Denman aren’t here either.

Long Run, the 2011 winner, is here, but with Bog Warrior and Sunnyhiullboy out, only nine go to post.

1457:

Great post-race quotes from the winning jockey and owner. Class acts.

Novice Hurdle winning jockey AP McCoy on BBC Radio 5 live: “It is very difficult to enjoy today after JT McNamara’s injury. He is like a family member and it is very sad.

“It is a very tough thing to enjoy.”

At Fishers Cross’ owner JP McManus on BBC Radio 5 live: “It was nice. With all that happened yesterday, it does not seem right to celebrate.

“JT McNamara’s family are all in our thoughts. I am delighted to be here, but it is difficult when our friend needs our prayers.”

1452:

Okay, the big one is up next, the Gold Cup. We’re gonna grab a cuppa and start the build up real soon…

1451:

Here’s the full result. A rare win for a favourite, the first since Wednesday.

1st     3 At Fishers Cross (IRE)     11/8 f
2nd     2 African Gold (IRE)     9/2
3rd     8 Inish Island (IRE)     13/2

Winning TrainerMiss R Curtis
Winning JockeyA McCoy
Runners 13 ran
Non runners4, 5, 7
Distances4 ½, Nose
SF £6.68
Tricast £29.02

1449:

And a win for AP McCoy, at last. At Fishers Cross was a worthy winner and won well in the end, by about 10 lengths. African Gold and Inish Island both very close for second and third. African Gold confirmed second.

1445:

Our Vinnie and I Shot The Sherrif gone. Jocks and horses fine

1441:

About to go here folks, good luck!

1437:

At Fishers Cross now very short. 2.3. Not sure where the money is coming from but it’s coming.

1433:

Going now officially SOFT (Good to Soft in places)

1426:

But we’re going to go against Ireland and back Nigel Twiston-Davies’ African Gold. He hasn’t done three miles yet but his record over hurdles is immense (six races, five wins, one second) so that will do for us, if he gets the trip…

The yard are in great form and the jockey, Sam Twiston Davies, has a few winners under his belt too.

The favourite is At Fishers Cross but it might be time to desert the JP McManus/AP McCoy runners. We never thought we’d say that but…

1424:

Our Vinnie, at 7.3, for Charles Byrnes, is a decent EW shout.

1422:

Right, the Albert Bartlett is next. Ballycasey is a non-runner so Ruby Walsh moves to ride Inish Island, a decent horse at 12.4 who likes it soft. It’s bucketing down still at Prestbury Park

1414:

Here’s your full result…

1st     24 Ted Veale (IRE)     10/1
2nd     10 Tennis Cap (FR)     11/1
3rd     22 Manyriverstocross (IRE)     25/1
4th     18 Shadow Catcher     16/1

Winning TrainerA J Martin
Winning JockeyB Cooper
Runners 28 ran
Unpl. FavCotton Mill 8/1 J, Ifandbutwhynot (IRE) 8/1 J
Distances1 ½, 4 ½

1414:

That Bryan Cooper double was priced at 54/1.

1413:

Tennis Cap led all the way but Ted Veale romped home as he always had more in the tank. An Irish 1-2…

1411:

He’s done it again, a double for Bryan Cooper, who piloted Ted Veale home. That looked oh so easy. Second was Tennis Cap

1407:

We’re off and running folks. Tennis Cap leads early

1404:

Great shot of Our Conor returning to the winners enclosure. By the way, winning jockey Bryan Cooper is on Ted Veale in the 2.05. Odds of 13.4

1400:

And a quick look at the odds on theTote reveals that Long Run is now the favourite at 4.1

1359:

And in case you were wondering, it is still lashing, so the Gold Cup will be on soft ground. Good news for Long Run fans, like me…

1358:

Ranjaan was a fancy for many but as it is Paul Nicholls’ we might give it a swerve. The most tipped is Ifandbutwhynot. Well handicapped, its yours at a skimpy enough 6.5.

Considering this race has turned up three 20/1 winners, and one 50/1 winner, in the last five years, it mightn’t be bad race to just stick a pin in it.

1355:

Okay, let’s give you a few EW bets to have a go at. Tennis Cap, by Willie Mullins, has a shout at 10.4. It’s won its last two too.

1350:

Delighted for the young fella…

Triumph Hurdle winning jockey Bryan Cooper on BBC Radio 5 live: “Our Conor has so much class, he has everything.

“The rain is now getting into the ground and I think it could open up and get a bit softer for the Gold Cup.

“I had never had a feeling like it when I came to the last. He could give Hurricane Fly a run for its money in the Champion Hurdle.”

1349:

Okay next up is 28-horse, Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle. This will be an EW bet only so we’ll take you through the runners in contention soon.

1345:

After the very bad JT McNamara news, and injury to Davy Russell, it is good to have something a bit more positive to write about. And Bryan Cooper, in case you hadn’t spotted it already, is sure to be a big name here for a very long time to come.

1343:

If you’re interested, Our Conor is now at just 5/1 for next year’s Champion Hurdle, joint favourite with Hurricane Fly. It looks a decent price based on what we just saw. He was 25/1 before this race for the 2014 Champion Hurdle.

1341:

In all the excitement here we missed the runners up but here they are for you…

1st     11 Our Conor (IRE)     4/1
2nd     4 Far West (FR)     4/1
3rd     13 Sametegal (FR)     33/1

Winning TrainerD T Hughes
Winning JockeyB Cooper
Runners 17 ran
Unpl. FavRolling Star (FR) 5/2 F
Distances15, 2 ¼

1340:

That was fantastic. The time wasn’t the best but Our Conor just cruised home. Another Irish win too. 11 wins now, to Britain’s 10.

1337:

Wow, what a win for Our Conor. Romps home. That was very impressive. We hope you backed him like we did.

1333:

And they’re off… after Cape Explorer was doing a bit of messing pre-start.

1329:

Won’t be long until it gets going here. Let’s hope Day 4 gets off to a good start for Ireland, eh?

1327:

Pictures just appearing on RTE now. The weather looks absolutely filthy there. We’re sure nobody who is there minds, though

1326:

The big money is all for Rolling Star, now 3.7. Our Conor is friendless, now out to 3.8. For Ruby backers, he’s on Far West. He’s 4.8 at the moment.

1324:

A grand soft day in Cheltenham…

1319:

It is windy and rainy at the course and that will definitely soften it up. But regardless of that we’re sticking with Our Conor. Three wins out of three over hurdles, with horses like Stockton’s Wing and Diakali, who both oppose him today, well beaten, we think Bryan Coopercan boot him home.

1315:

One that is coming in, from an Irish point of view, is Stocktons Wing. With AP McCoy riding it looks a great EW shout at 12.3

1313:

Right, let’s get into the Triumph Hurdle. This morning Dessie Hughes’ Our Conor was the favourite but now it is Rolling Star, who is in to 3.8. Lots of love for Henderson and Geraghty.

1311:

And here’s your non-runners

14:40     4 Ballybough Pat   5 Ballycasey   7 Cloudy Copper
15:20     2 Bog Warrior   9 Sunnyhillboy
16:00     20 Rumbury Grey
17:15     7 Benefficient

1309:

Okay, the going is officially Good to Soft, Good in places but they are forcasting rain to soften things up, possibly by quite a bit by Gold Cup time. We’ll keep you posted…

1303:

Before we get into the details of the ground, the weather and the non-runners, have a look at this video of the celebrations following Benifficient’s win yesterday.

1256:

You can see my ‘expert’ tips in the preview but a real expert, top jockey and Meath man Barry Geraghty, has given his tips to the Tote. Here they are.

– Reverse Exacta bet on –  Rolling Star & Our Conor  in first race (Pick these horses to come 1st and 2nd in any order)

– Each Way on Ma Filleule in 4:40

– Win on Bob’s Worth in Gold Cup (straight from the Jockey’s mouth!)

For Barry’s full preview of Day 4, just click here.

1254:

As always, our racing coverage is brought to you by theTote.com. There are many reasons why they are the best place to bet at Cheltenham but the Jackpot and Placepot pools are surely the best.

Today the Jackpot pool already stands at £123,512 and the Placepot is up to £62,657. Sign up today to get in on the action.

1249:

But the show goes on and we will bring you all seven races from the final day of Cheltenham, including the highlight of he week, the Gold Cup, at 3.20.

1247:

As we spoke about in our full preview of Day 4 of the Festival it is hard to think about today’s action without thinking about JT McNamara. The Irish amateur jockey is undergoing surgery today on some fractured vertebrae after a heavy fall yesterday.

We can only hope he is okay, and his family and friends will be in everyone’s thoughts today, where ever they take in the action.
