Carlos Condit will now face BJ Penn at UFC 137, after the officials at the promotion passed on a rematch between Penn and Jon Fitch.
It is unclear yet whether the bout is definitely a number one contender fight but it would be an interesting twist, given that the main event on that card is the highly anticipated super-fight between Nick Diaz and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
Condit is fresh off a stunning flying knee KO of undefeated contender Don Hyung Kim at UFC 132, while Penn is recovering from an injury that forced him out of the previously slated rematch with Fitch after their draw at UFC 127 in Sydney.
“The Prodigy” has been having a rough patch in his career of late turning in a number of poor performances in his bouts with current lightweight champ Frankie Edgar.
It would be a huge feather in the cap of the former WEC welterweight champion if he could knock off one of the legends of modern MMA and victory for the Hawaiian might move him closer to another shot at rival St-Pierre and a chance to get the welterweight title back.
Once again it appears Jon Fitch is the loser in all of this, despite having one of the best records in the UFC there is very little momentum behind him because of his grinding wrestling style with nine of his previous ten fights going to the judges.
