Confirmed: Conlan’s opponent Vladimir Nikitin will not fight again at the Rio Olympics

This just makes it even worse…

The rumours began circulating yesterday that Vladimir Nikitin would be unable to continue following injuries sustained in his fight with Michael Conlan and the news has been confirmed today.

The 26-year-old was due to face America’s Shakur Stevenson in the semi-finals where he would have had a chance to win a guaranteed silver medal, but he has withdrawn from the event on advice from medical staff.

Nikitin was carrying a cut from a bout earlier in the competition and the same wound was reopened in his loss to Conlan, which was a hugely unpopular decision all over the world.

Conlan was left irate when a unanimous decision went the way of the Russian and held back no punches in his scathing assessment of the AIBA.

The news that Nikitin has withdrawn will no doubt leave a sour taste in Conlan’s mouth following, what can be called a poor decision, by the judges involved.
