Coach John Kavanagh invited a teenager who was homeless as recently as this summer to train at SBG Ireland, after hearing about his excellent Junior Cert results.
Carlos Wolfe, a 15-year-old from Dublin, studied in emergency accommodation to achieve seven honours in his Junior Cert having been forced to sleep rough in the Phoenix Park.
When Kavanagh heard his story via the Irish Mirror, he got in touch with Carlos and invited him to train at the same place where Conor McGregor, Aisling Daly and Paddy Holohan started out.
He was picked up from school, where he is now in fifth year, in a limo and taken straight to the gym.
Kavanagh posted a photo with Holohan, Daly and Carlos to his Facebook page (see above) and wrote: “I’m looking forward to training alongside this young man at SBG and learning from his incredible mindset, I have no doubt big things are in his future no matter what path he takes.”
Carlos – who plans to go on to college after finishing school – got a full kit bag to get him started, gloves, shin pads as well as two VIP tickets to UFC Dublin.
Carlos and his mam Lorraine are currently living in emergency accommodation on Dublin’s North Circular Road.
