The saga continues…
It’s been ongoing for weeks now but it’s surely close to a climax now as the date for UFC 205 on November 12 creeps ever closer.
Originally, reports suggested that Conor McGregor v Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title was close to being made the main event for the card but those rumours have faded with Dana White’s pronouncement that any Alvarez fight would be against Khabib Nurmagomedov.
While it seems like a pay day against McGregor is what Alvarez was holding out for, he may be fired to face the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, probably for far less money.
It’s a bit of a mess at the moment…
But in a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Dana White revealed what his plans for UFC 205 card are, although he’d want to get a move on and sort them out as we’re just seven weeks out from the event.
“Conor’s foot is hurt, but he thinks he can fight,” White said. “I want him to fight [Jose] Aldo.”
As for Nurmagomedov, White said simply, “He is the No. 1 contender.”
Speaking to Yahoo Sports, Nurmagomedov said: “Alvarez wants to fight McGregor, because it’s an easy fight and it’s a lot of money to fight him.
“But he has to fight me. Dana White has told me, ‘He is fighting you. He has to fight you.’”
It seems only logical that The Notorious would have to go back down to featherweight to defend his crown against the interim champion Jose Aldo, or else relinquish the title altogether.
But there’s never been a bigger star in the UFC than Conor McGregor, so inevitably, he’s playing off a different set of rules than any other fighter on the UFC roster.
McGregor often, but not always, gets what he wants…
Maybe he won’t fight at all this year, and come good on his promise to pursue other ventures outside of the UFC.
The saga continues…
