Former Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne star Dessie Baker is to join the team at JOE.ie, providing a weekly column on the Airtricity League, which begins this weekend.
Dessie, a Manchester United youth player and Ireland youth international in his teens, played for Shelbourne, Longford Town and Shamrock Rovers in the domestic league, as well as spending time on loan at UCD and Dundalk since returning home from England in 1996.
Having won the League of Ireland on four occasions, he is as qualified as anyone to give an insider’s view into life in the Airtricity League, and will bring his vast knowledge and forthright opinions to his column on a weekly basis.
Dessie’s column is just one aspect of the increased coverage of the Airtricity League on JOE this season, with player interviews and comprehensive match reports also part of the package.
“I’m delighted to be joining the team at JOE.ie,” said Dessie.
“Having played in the league for a number of years, I have plenty of opinions on football in this country and am delighted to be contributing to the coverage of the Airtricity League on the website.”
Dessie joins a strong team of sports columnists on the site that includes football expert Ken Early, rugby great Malcolm O’Kelly and GAA legends Sean Og O hAilpin and Ciaran Whelan.
“We’re delighted to welcome Dessie to the site,” said JOE.ie Sports Editor Conor Heneghan.
“To have the views of someone with such experience of football in Ireland will undoubtedly add significantly to the coverage of a league that badly needs exposure at the moment.”
