With Ricky Hatton expected to formally announce his comeback to boxing tomorrow, Amir Khan fancies getting in the ring with him.
Our hearts sank a bit earlier this week when we first heard the rumour that former world champ Ricky Hatton was about to come out of retirement. It is now over three years since Manny Pacquiao did the below to the Hitman in Las Vegas and hanging up his gloves looked to be the only option for Hatton after the brutality of that KO.
Since then Hatton has turned promoter but after losing his deal with Sky earlier this year, Hatton, still only 33, is expected to announce his return to the ring tomorrow.
It seems the plan for Hatton is that the former light welterweight and welterweight champ will fight a former foe Paulie Malignaggi but Amir Khan, himself in need of a bit of a boost after losing his way in recent fights, is looking to fight the Manchester man.
Khan’s manager Asif Vali tells the Daily Mirror Khan is prepared to move up in weight to fight Hatton.
“I’ve spoken to Amir about this before and while he and Ricky are good friends, he knows boxing is a business,” said Vali.
“A fight between Amir and Ricky would be huge. It would be a massive super-fight. It could sell 100,000 at Wembley and everyone would want to see it.
“I’m sure they could put their friendship to one side for 12 weeks for this fight.
“Ricky’s bound to be asked that question at his press conference on Friday, and if the opportunity for them to fight arises, then who knows what will happen?”
Khan has lost his last two and Hatton’s last fight ended with one of the most vicious KOs in living memory. Based on that we hope this fight doesn’t come to pass. But this is boxing so nothing would surprise us, even if the bout may not be as popular with the public as Khan’s manager expects.
