Eamon Dunphy is never a man to avoid controversy.
The RTÉ coverage of Euro 2016 began this evening and Eamon Dunphy wasted no time in venting his feelings about Roy Keane and the Irish management.
Speaking about the comments Roy Keane made concerning Aiden McGeady where he criticised the Everton man’s performance and other unnamed players.
The assistant manager’s comments caused somewhat of a stir when he made them following Ireland’s loss to Belarus last week.
Speaking of Keane, Dunphy said “I think Roy Keane’s press conference after the Belarus game was a mistake where he hammered Aiden McGeady and other unnamed players.”
He continued on later to state that: “I have a feeling of unease about the remarks he made.
“I don’t think he should be criticising the players in public, he’s the assistant manager.
“I don’t think he should have made such a big deal about Aiden McGeady, to talk about Aiden like that. It’s inconceivable to me that the assistant manager of England, France or Spain would give a press conference like that.
“Utterly and totally inconceivable.”
When questioned on this point by Darragh Maloney, Dunphy said that other assistant managers would have dealt with it differently.
“[Other managers] wouldn’t give a press conference or certainly, they wouldn’t give a press conference where they expressed views about a player or players”
