The former PFA chairman has left the hospital six weeks after the incident.

For those of you who may not know, former footballer Clarke Carlisle attempted suicide six weeks ago after stepping out in front of a lorry in Yorkshire.

In a candid interview with The Sun, the ex-Burnley player revealed that his attempted suicide was the culmination of an 18 month battle with depression.

“I had to die,” he said. “This wasn’t escaping or running away. This was the perfect answer. It made everyone happy and it ticked every box. I took two steps into the road and then jumped into the truck, like a full shoulder charge. I can remember that impact. Bang. Then lights out. I don’t know how long had passed. It must have been a few minutes.”

“I jumped in front of the lorry because I wanted to die,” he added.

Carlisle was charged with drink-driving two weeks prior to the incident and is now undergoing counselling while his meeting with the magistrates is adjourned.

Carlisle’s wife Gemma took to Twitter with some passionate words of encouragement for those people who may be suffering from depression in light of her husband’s struggle.
