Fancy yourself as the next Conor McGregor? Okay, firstly you’ve a long way to go and secondly, maybe you should start here.
We’re all very familiar with the concept of White Collar Boxing, where two amateurs are trained in the basics of boxing before getting in the ring to have a go at the sport under strict professionalsupervision.
Now some enterprising chaps in Limerick are launching White Collar Cage Fighting and considering the growing popularity of MMA in Ireland, we expect this to be very popular indeed. Jason Kenny, a Ju Jitsu coach and Francis Ryan are the two men behind White Collar Cage Fighting and the first event will be held on May 10 in Limerick’s South Court Hotel.
But as MMA is a very serious business, anyone who wishes to take part will have to undergo a rigourous eight-week training programme. Strength and Conditioning training, plus and diet and nutrition – BSN and The Vitamin Shop are providing supplements for each fighter – will be given. All fighters will also get expert coaching from Ger Healy of Shark Bait MMA, James Bourke of the Limerick Judo Academy, Jason Kenny, Ju-Jitsu & Conditioning coach, Des Galligan, Tang Soo Do and Srdan Kovacevic, IKMF.
The camp will be full of those with zero experience to those with some of a range of martial arts but at no time will a novice be in the ring against a more experienced fighter. Safety and fun is paramount in White Collar Cage Fighting and some strict rules apply to the actual bouts.
There are no head shots of any kind,only body and leg shots, an opponent cannot kick another opponent from a standing position, while he or she is on the ground. It is quite similar to MMA League rules, except that the gloves are bigger and the rounds are shorter.
The event is open to both men and women and all training will take place in Limerick’s Martial Arts Academy. On the night a professional octagon will be set up, with all the lights, sounds, MCs and ring girls of a big MMA promotion in front of hundreds of fans.
