Gameweek 7 review
Far be it from me to gloat but there were a few raised eyebrows in the office late last week when I tipped ‘past-it’ midfielder Frank Lampard to do the business against Bolton at the weekend. Fat Frank has an excellent record against the Trotters and along with ex-Bolton man Daniel Sturridge, he went to town on Owen Coyle’s misfiring side on Sunday afternoon.
Three goals and three bonus points for Lampard earned him 20 points, while two goals, an assist and two bonus points returned 15 points for Sturridge, who was far from obliging to the team that employed him last season.
A hat-trick was also the order of the day at Craven Cottage, where Andy Johnson struck half of Fulham’s six goals against QPR. Like Lampard, Johnson scored 20 points, while teammates Bobby Zamora (14) and Danny Murphy (12) also did well.
Samir Nasri didn’t start for Manchester City against Blackburn, but managed a goal, two assists and three bonus points for 17 points in total after coming off the bench for injury victim Sergio Aguero. City’s bitter rivals Manchester United were far from convincing against Norwich, but Anderson still notched up 11 points after he got the ball rolling with a header in the second half. It’s just a pity about the ridiculous celebration that followed.
Elsewhere, Jose Enrique (11), Kyle Walker (10) and Aleksandar Kolarov deserve honourable mentions on what was a free-scoring weekend in the Premier League overall.
Champion J-League
Declan McAnallen decided to change the name of his team during the week and it seems to have provided fresh impetus for his charges, Team of Gary Breens, who rocketed to the top of the Champion J-League with 59 points.
Jose Enrique and Gabriel Agbonlahor provided the bulk of the points for Declan, while the decision to hand Wayne Rooney the captain’s armband was vindicated with ten points.
Below Declan McAnallen, Robert Leavy’s FC Clunge vacated the top spot for the first time in a few weeks, while Trevor Clendinning’s Slashers Stars make up the top three after an impressive 73 points.
None of the JOE team come anywhere near to troubling the top dogs in the Champion J-League, with Nick Bradshaw coming closest in 61st place. This column wouldn’t be complete without a customary mention of Emmet Purcell, who has recovered from a disastrous start and merciless ribbing at the hands of his JOE colleagues to rise to the lofty heights of 319th in the table.
