Queensland Reds coach Ewen McKenzie is the odds on favourite to replace Declan Kidney in the Irish hotseat and his comments will do little to change that.

The former World Cup winning Wallaby has been linked to the post since he stated an interest in coaching at Test level and will be leaving his current post at the end of the season. With yesterday’s expected news that Kidney’s four-year reign is to come to an end, the Australian is hotly tipped to be at the top of the IRFU wishlist.

And his comments to Australian media will serve only shorten already low odds with the bookies.

“I have had no discussions with Ireland, I haven’t heard anything from them. They haven’t contacted me and I haven’t contacted them,” McKenzie told reporters.

“I have heard nothing in that space, I’ve only read things in the media.”

While he did say discussions hadn’t taken place as of yet, he is certainly open to the idea.

“I have said I am looking for coaching challenges at the next level, and I am looking for whatever the possibilities are. It’s the type of job I am interested in looking at, but there have been no discussions,” he added.

One man who has seemed to rule himself out of the running is former Springbok World Cup winning coach Jake White, himself also a current coach in the Super XV.

Thanks for the heads up Jake.
