Doctor, out-half, ROG irritant and all-round legend Felipe Contepomi announced his retirement today. Here’s a little tribute to the former Leinster man.

Argentina may have gained a Pope this week, but they have just lost one of their greatest players. Felipe Contepomi has today announced his retirement from rugby at the end of the season, blowing Michael Owen out of the water in our book.

A hero at Leinster, where he played for six years, Contepomi went on to play for Toulon and Stade Francais and picked up 79 caps for the Pumas but it is his time in Dublin  that means he is loved in (some parts of) Ireland.

Brilliant in the 2006 Heineken Cup quarter final win over Biarritz, Contepomi finally won the big one, admittedly from the sideline, in 2009, after being injured in that year’s epic semi-final win over Munster at Croke Park.

Of course, in his time here he became very involved in many heated exchanges with fierce rivals Munster, and especially with Ronan O’Gara. This moment, from that infamous 2009 semi-final, is surely one that Contepomi relished.

Then there is this famous penalty against Connacht that simply never gets old.

Before we go, here’s a full five-minute tribute to the good Doctor. We hope retirement, and the world of medicine, treats him well.
