Galway place entire squad on transfer market

With mounting financial problems and a new record for consecutive losses, Galway United will put their entire squad up for sale during the summer transfer window.

The bad news keeps on coming for Airtricity League fans, with crisis club Galway United set to put their entire squad up for sale during the summer transfer window.

The Tribesmen’s decision was reached after talks with the Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland.

The club is in serious financial difficulty and will also try to raise funds from fans through a campaign set to begin in Galway city centre on Saturday with a flag day and continue at the team’s next home match against UCD on Friday 1 July.

Galway have not been faring well this season, with falling crowds, wage cuts and a club record for consecutive losses as they slumped to their 14th defeat in a row on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 to St Patrick’s Athletic at home.

They’ve scored just eight goals this season while conceding an incredible 46.

They are currently rooted to the bottom of the Airtricity Premier League having picked up just five points from 19 matches, and are now six points behind second-from-bottom Drogheda United.

Given such a scenario, it’s almost impossible to see a way for Galway to halt the slide and avoid disappearing into the oblivion of the First Division or possibly beyond.
