Gdynia good thing for Ireland

Yes folks it’s time to dig out Google Maps as Ireland are going to be based in Gdynia for Euro 2012.

The Polish seaport is just 20kms from Gdansk but a much larger 325kms from Poznan, where we play our first and third games in the group.

Still it doesn’t look like a bad place to be based at all, right on the Baltic Sea. The Swedes were going to be based here but when they were drawn into a Ukrainian group, the option fell to us.

Our dear leader, Giovanni Trapatoni, liked what he saw.

“I am very happy that we have been able to secure Gdynia as a base camp for Euro 2012. This base meets and exceeds all of our criteria, having a good training ground, being close to the airport and being based in Poland,” said the manager.

“The hotel and training facilities are excellent and provide us with a well-positioned base with all of the facilities required for the championships.”

So no prospect of another Saipan then we hope. The FAI also gave a few more details.

“The team will be located at the Sheraton Sopot Hotel which has a full range of facilities for the players during their stay.

“The Republic of Ireland will train at the Municipal Stadium in Gdynia, a new ground with a capacity of 15,000. The training facilities are of a very high standard and will provide ideal preparation for the team.”

So that’s all that sorted. Hope they stock up on Guinness, rashers and Solpadeine for the hordes about to arrive all the same.

By the way the picture above is the Premier Suite in the Sheraton. Not sure Trap will like the carpet so thats where John Delaney will be hanging his tie after a long day of buying fans pints. And he can keep an eye on the players with the handy telescope provided.
