Former heavyweight champion David Haye is reported to have kept his promise and retired from boxing.
The British fighter vowed to hang up his gloves by his 31st birthday, which falls this Thursday, and it seems the ‘Hayemaker’ is sticking to the script.
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) secretary Robert Smith told The Sun: “I received an email on Monday advising me Haye would not be carrying on.
“The board will discuss it on Wednesday but there is no way we could go against his wish not to renew his boxing licence. Without it, he can’t fight.”
Haye lost his WBA title to Wladimir Klitschko in July but it was widely expected he would get back in the ring and try and win another belt, perhaps against the other lumbering Ukranian Vitali Klitschko.
But it seems the Londoner, who always claimed he wanted to retire early so he could keep all his faculties, is putting his health over a few more massive paydays.
Do you believe him or is at all part of building the hype up to his next fight?
