Half the teams have now bitten the dust, so here are the 16 teams left in the hunt for the fantastic Ladbrokes World Cup Sweep prize. Plus we reveal the owner of the worst team, who also get a sweet prize.

Before the World Cup kicked off, we asked for admins of Irish amateur soccer teams to apply to join a World Cup Sweepstakes run by Ladbrokes. The deal was that Ladbrokes will place a €200 bet on each country at Ladbrokes prices and whichever team won collects all the sweet winning cash.

A Brazil win will net the winner €600 while a Costa Rica win will return an astounding €800,000. We joked about that at the time of the original piece but after the group stage, the truly enormous win could be on.

From the many entries we selected 32 teams and randomly allocated a World Cup team to each one and now with the group stage in the books, we can reveal who the 16 teams left in the hunt are.

Team Name Team
Caherdavin Celtic Costa Rica
Willows Football Club Holland
Dunboyne afc France
Carndonagh FC Argentina
Newbridge Colts FC USA
Gathabawn fc Brazil
Monread FC Colombia
Postal Aylesbury f.c Greece
Killarney Celtic Germany
Caragh Celtic FC Chile
Partry Athletic Switzerland
Virginia FC Nigeria
Kilmanahan united FC Mexico
Ardagh United Belgium
Quay Celtic Fc Algeria
Terenure College AFC Uruguay

Caherdavin Celtic may be dreaming of Real Madrid type-facilities if Costa Rica can go all the way but all these teams are in the hunt for the big cash prize at the end of the World Cup.

Like all good sweeps, there was also a consolation prize, and a pretty good one at that, for the worst team. Cameroon took that ‘honour’ with no point and a goal difference of -8. Griffith Rovers from Finglas were the lucky/unlucky team who had Cameroon so they now win a training session for their club with Irish soccer legend Tony Cascarino. Not bad, eh?

We’ll be back with updates as the rounds progress from here, as now it gets really exciting.
