Hoops title party will have to wait

The monsoon-like weather conditions that have hit Dublin today mean that Shamrock Rovers won’t be celebrating a second successive Airtricity League title just yet.

The Hoops were due to take on UCD at the Belfield Bowl this evening, and three points for Michael O’Neill’s men would have given them an unassailable lead ahead of Sligo Rovers at the top of the table.

The heavens have been open over Dublin all day, however, and a pitch inspection carried out at 5.30pm confirmed the inevitable postponement of the fixture, which is now likely to take place tomorrow evening instead at the same venue.

As a result, the champagne will have to be put on ice and the fireworks kept in storage (and hopefully away from Mario Balotelli), but with the weather expected to improve (we’ve heard that one before) it may prove to be only a brief delay before the Hoops get the party started.
