If you go to Cheltenham this year, you’ll need to win big to eat this sandwich

A bacon sandwich is a wonderful, wonderful thing, but would you pay nearly €200 for one?

A bacon sandwich is a wonderful, wonderful thing, but would you pay nearly €200 for one?

Probably the king of all the sarnies, the bacon sandwich is simply unbeatable for setting you up for the day/curing hangovers/keeping you going if you miss your dinner.

But a café in that haven of National Hunt racing, Tangberry’s coffee house in Cheltenham, have decided to create a luxury version that is well out of our price range for brekkie.

Appearing in the Metro today the sandwich costs £150 (€177) and while it certainly sounds delicious, you better have picked a lot of winners at Prestbury Park to buy it.

The ‘Bacon Bling’ sandwich has seven rashers from a very rare breed of pig but the extra cost comes with the other toppings. Truffle spread (?), water cress, free range egg, sliced truffles, saffron and edible gold dust push the price up and the whole lot is cooked in truffle oil, adding another layer of expense.

Café owner Paul Phillips tells the paper: ‘Each one is expensive to make but I’ll keep doing it forever if it means raising money for charity. I worked out the price by tripling what it costs to buy the products so I think that’s fair with the time and effort put in.

‘It is a bit cheeky though, it’s expensive – but hopefully there are people out there willing to part with their cash for a good quality bacon sarnie.’

The charity he mentions is British charity called SKRUM that helps kids learn how to play rugby in Swaziland.

So, if you do make the pilgrimage to Cheltenham this year, and do very well in the betting ring, you now know what to have for breakfast.
