IRFU confirm that Peter O’Mahony is out of the World Cup

Paul O'Connell and Jonny Sexton are waiting for scans

Peter O’Mahony is out of the Rugby World Cup with a knee injury, while Paul O’Connell and Jonny Sexton await scans to discover the extent of their respective injuries.

The IRFU will give another update on both Sexton (groin) and O’Connell (hamstring) later today, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely that the latter will ever be seen in an Irish jersey again.

Team manager Mick Kearney confirmed that O’Connell sustained a “significant hamstring injury” and has been hospitalised. He is awaiting further scans today but management are not optimistic.

It is suspected that the lock has torn his hamstring off the bone and will now face an extended spell on the sidelines, bringing to an end an Ireland career that has seen the Munster legend capped 108 times and become one of the all-time greats in a green jersey.
