Kauto Star is suffering from an infection following his failure to land a fifth successive King George VI Chase last Saturday.

Trainer Paul Nicholls confirmed via Twitter that his 11-year-old star bled after the race at Kempton on Saturday and is now on a course of antibiotics to cure the infection.

“Just had Kauto Star’s blood test results. Shows signs of inflammation and low-grade infection. Week’s antibiotics and easy few days. Update on Friday,” Nicholls tweeted.

Kauto Star was beaten into third place by Long Run at the weekend, with speculation coming from critics that this could be the beginning of the end for the two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.
