The cheapest way to make yourself very, very wealthy is to land a football accumulator. It’s easier said than done but when it comes off…

Luck is something that a handful of people seem to be born with.

They get the best jobs, keep their looks well into old age and, in some cases, pull off a big win after a bet or playing the Lotto. Sports fans who have the occasional flutter on the football, hurling, soccer or horses may have the odd Euro on one team or horse to win, but even backing the rank outsider can only win you a small amount.

Betting on the outcome of one game or tournament can be fun, but the odds given on one team winning against the other are usually fairly short.

Punters who want a little more excitement can plump for an accumulator bet where they predict the outcome of several games for longer odds. Accumulators rarely come off, but when they do, boy can they can be lucrative.

A recent accumulator bet placed with Ladbrokes saw one very lucky punter win a massive £60,000 (€73,000).

How did they do it? They placed a modest £2 bet on the outcome of 14 football games. The final match on his selection was the Manchester derby between City and United. He needed United to win 3-2 in order to scoop the big jackpot.

Until late on in the game, it looked like his hopes of winning would be dashed, but fortunately, a last-gasp winner from Robin van Persie helped to get him what he wanted. The punter from Birmingham is now much better off, has a number of envious friends and probably has an RVP tattoo somewhere about his person in tribute to the Dutchman.

To win big from betting on sport, you have to place a bet with huge odds, whereas winning big elsewhere isn’t as complicated. The Lotto has created millionaires all over Ireland, many of them unsure of what to do with their winnings.

The most recent winners from Dundalk won €3,595,140, making many ticket holders jealous. While betting on sport requires a little knowledge, scooping a big jackpot prize from the Lottery is all about luck.

Some people have superstitions about certain numbers, but it’s simply about hoping your numbers come up.

That’s why we still prefer the good, old-fashioned coupon.

An accumulator placed in January 2011 on nine midweek football matches gave one lucky punter record-breaking winnings of a staggering £272,529.20 (around €350,000) from a bet of just £2.50 with Ladbrokes.

The bet in question involved correctly predicting the scores of nine games and was the biggest payout for a multiple bet in the company’s history.

As we said, it isn’t easy, but for small stake punters, the footie coupon is your only man.
