Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the Carling Nations Cup clash with Wales next Tuesday.
The 20-year old had originally been named in the under-21 squad that will travel to Larnaca for a friendly with Cyprus next week, but the talented midfielder has been promoted to the senior squad after impressing for Wigan since returning from injury last month
Birmingham’s Keith Fahey and Celtic’s Anthony Stokes, meanwhile, have been placed on standby after manager Giovanni Trapattoni finalised his 22-man squad for the Wales game earlier today.
Ireland’s clash with Wales kicks off at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday at 7.45pm.
