Race fans that stayed up until the early hours of this morning were treated to a Jenson Button victory, as the Englishman kicked off his F1 season in style.
The McClaren driver recalled memories of his 2009 season winning by taking the chequered flag with a season-opening victory in Melbourne. The victory was Button’s third down in Melbourne in the past four years and 13th of his F1 career.
Button was relatively comfortabe throughout the race and finished ahead of reigning champion Sebastian Vettel by 2.2 seconds, while his countryman Lewis Hamilton took third place on the podium.
“As we all know every win means a lot, and for us as a team it shows how important the winter is,” he said after the race.
“We’ve had a atrong winter, so it’s nice to come away with a victory. The guys back in the factory in Woking have done a fantastic job.
“This will help them push harder so a big thank you to everyone. It’s a fantastic day.”
