JOE meets Yohan “The Beast” Blake

JOE caught up with Yohan “The Beast” Blake at the launch of the new adidas BOOST runner, to talk about running, runners, bananas, and the Universe.

JOE

We waited and waited, but JOE struggled to get much time with the 2nd fastest man in the planet… And, that’s not a speed joke.

He’s a popular guy, and at the adidas BOOST launch event, everyone and their attractive mother was trying to get photos with “The Beast”. Understandably that’s gonna take some time.

What takes even more time though, is that everytime a hot girl asked for a photo, he’d hand his phone to someone and get them to take a snap for his own collection!

What a man. Hat tip for cheekiness.

When JOE did finally get to chat with one of the most charismatic and confident men in sport, he had this to say…

On breaking records…

I’m getting faster each year. Last year I ran 9.69, close to the world record. You know, my coach just wants to keep it simple and keep training hard. You never know, it’s around the corner… it’s soon.

On being one of the fastest men in the world…

I wouldn’t say in the world. I’d say the universe. When I train that hard, I know the only man in the universe who can beat me is THE fastest man in the universe – Usain Bolt. It gives me a warm feeling. I’m really close to it. It’s good, encourages me.

On how low he can go…

Like I say, each year it gets faster and faster. Last year I kept running 9.7, then 9.6, and each year it goes down, because there’s a lot more to improve for me in training. I’m working hard on that, and my coach is working on it as well. The time will lower.

On Jamaica’s seemingly never ending talent pool…

We spring up every year. You can’t stop it. It’s in our genes. Our ancestors. We have a lot more to offer. I’m just 23, I’m not even at my peak – I’m just waking up. This year, I said: “it’s my world invasion”

On his plans for this year…

I definitely want to defend my title this year in Russia. I think it’s goinng to be great, but I’m training and working hard right now for Moscow.

On the secret to his success…

One of my secrets, I’m gonna let you in. I eat 16 bananas every day. That’s my secret. Oh. And if i’m low on energy, I eat for Snickers.

I dunno if it’ll make us run any faster? But if it gives us ANY of his magic with the ladies, we’re off to see the lads in Fyffes…
