On a weekend that gave us an astonishing number of great goals, we still had to whittle our selection down to a measly five. Obviously Irish captain Robbie Keane made the list.
5. Manucho (Angola v Burkina Faso)
Granted, we haven’t been watching too much of the Africa Cup of Nations but after watching a series of stunning strikes from last night’s Angola win over Burkina Faso, we realise that we’ve been missing out.
The game itself was decided by a stunning effort from Manchester United reject Manucho, now struggling at Real Valladolid. You can watch the goal from the 2.18 mark in the clip.
4. Robbie Keane (Wolves v Aston Villa)
Robbie Keane got back to what he does best last weekend – scoring goals and refusing to celebrate against teams he had previously played for.
The Irish captain sealed an Aston Villa victory over his former club Wolves with an absolute screamer, which you can find below.
3. Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City)
£150m for the services of Gareth Bale may be tabloid nonsense of the highest order, yet the Welshman is in a rich vein of form and should have helped Spurs garner a deserved draw against Manchester City with an inch-perfect hit yesterday.
It wasn’t to be for ‘Arry’s men, but Bale’s equaliser will be remembered for quite a while.
2. Lionel Messi (Malaga v Barcelona)
Here’s a ridiculous fact – Lionel Messi has scored 36 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona this season. Hitting a hat-trick against a sorry Malaga last night, the Argentine left the best ’til last.
1. Craig Gardner (Sunderland v Swansea)
Craig Gardner may be homesick and longing to head back to the Championship with former side Birmingham, yet while he’s behind incredible goals such as his strike against Swansea, Martin O’Neill won’t hear any of it.
“There’s interest from other Premier League teams around the West Midlands area, but I wouldn’t want him to leave,” said the Sunderland boss after the game. You can see why below:
