JT McNamara 'stable' but remains in an induced coma following Cheltenham fall

A statement on behalf of JT McNamara’s family has revealed that the jockey is ‘stable’ but ‘remains in an induced coma’ following his fall at Cheltenham on Thursday.

37-year old McNamara sustained serious injuries after falling from Galaxy Rock at the first fence of the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup on Thursday and after the meeting was delayed to allow McNamara to be treated by medics at the track, he was subsequently airlifted to hospital.

McNamara was put in an induced coma before being transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol and he underwent surgery on his fractured C3 and C4 vertebrae on Friday.

The McNamara family have issued a statement on JT’s condition through Dr Adrian McGoldrick, Turf Club senior medical officer and Lisa Hancock, CEO of the Injured Jockeys’ Fund, which read:

“We can report that following lengthy surgery yesterday JT McNamara is in a stable condition. He remains in an induced coma at Frenchay hospital, Bristol.

“No further updates will be released until Tuesday, March 19 and the family politely request that the media do not contact Frenchay hospital direct.

“They would also like to thank everyone for their kind support and best wishes for JT.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with JT and his family at this difficult time.
