Robbie Keane and James McCarthy have pulled out of the Ireland squad for this week’s Carling Nations Cup clash with Wales.
Keane, who has played two games for West Ham this week following a loan move from Tottenham Hotspur, has pulled out with a calf problem sustained in today’s defeat to Birmingham City, while McCarthy, who scored a brace in Wigan’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Blackburn at the DW Stadium on Saturday, has been pulled out of the squad by his club, who cited tiredness as the reason for doing so.
Keane and McCarthy join Liam Lawrence and Leon Best on the injury list, while Shay Given will captain the side in the absence of Keane.
In a press conference ahead of the game today, Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni revealed his disappointment at losing two quality players.
“It is a pity for Robbie because this game was an opportunity for him to continue playing after joining West Ham last week,” he said.
“The (calf) injury can be dangerous but we hope he recovers quickly.
“McCarthy was someone I spoke of who could play two positions – in midfield or behind the striker. Sure, I am disappointed that he is not with us but the Wigan physio says it is better that he stays at home after coming back from an injury.”
Trapattoni confirmed that both Seamus Coleman and Ciaran Clark will make their debuts against Wales and the intention to use all six substitutes.
Ireland’s clash with Wales kicks off at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday at 7.45pm.
