We’re going to see Ken Doherty in action at the Crucible again after the Dubliner qualified for the World Snooker Championship in dramatic fashion last night.

Next week sees the start of the World Snooker Championship, a two-week feast for fans of the green baize and a real test of staying power for viewers, never mind the players. But this year’s renewal will be a lot more interesting to Irish fans with 1997 champ Ken Doherty making the grade once again.

Doherty has missed two of the last three World Championships, falling in the qualifiers, but the Ranelagh man made the cut last night in dramatic fashion.

In a first-to-ten match with Anthony Hamilton, Ken-Do raced into a 9-7 lead but then the wheels came off. Hamilton got it back to 9-9 and then the English potter went 52-12 ahead in the decider before Doherty pulled off a superb break of 62 to win the match and return to the top tournament in the game for the first time since 2010.

Not so lucky were other veterans like Steve Davis and Jimmy White, who won’t be playing this year but we’re just glad to see Ken back in the big time.

We know Ken likes a bet too so we reckon he will probably have a few euro on himself at 150/1 to win the lot at Sheffield. Anyone else tempted?
