Kerry finally beat Down for a change

There are not many teams who can claim to have the Indian sign over Kerry, but Down do, or at least they did until today.

There are not many teams who can claim to have the Indian sign over Kerry, but Down do, or at least they did until today.

The Kingdom have never beaten the Mourne County in the championship and they travelled north this afternoon with the intention of settling a few scores. It was a comfortable enough win for Jack O’Connor’s men in the end as they prevailed by six points in Newry to claim their second win of the campaign.

It’s been a tough few months for Donegal since the joys of last season, but they finally got their league campaign up and running with a victory over reigning champions Cork in Ballybofey. Michael Murphy was prominent in what was a low-scoring affair (hardly a surprise) as Jim McGuinness’ side went on to win by four points.

In Division Two, Westmeath enjoyed a single point victory over neighbours Galway in Mullingar and Tyrone had too much for Louth in Drogheda. Longford and Wexford enjoyed wins in Division Three, as did Carlow, Clare and Waterford in Division Four.

The team of the day, however, was Fermanagh, who racked up an astonishing 9-23 in a whopping 46-point defeat of Kilkenny in Freshford at the end of what has been a tough, tough week for the lesser of the GAA sports in the county.
